¡HOLA! I'M IONE

Native Spanish Teacher

From Barcelona to Navarra, I had bilingual beginnings.

I was born in Barcelona, destined to know at least two languages: Spanish and Catalan. But when I was 5 years old, my parents separated, and we moved to Navarra where I also learned Basque.

As a child, languages came naturally to me. I mean, what child doesn’t pick up languages quickly? English was no exception. That’s why my mother enrolled my brother and me in private classes with a teacher to further improve. I quickly became one of the best in the class. The downside was that the teacher would yell at me when I made mistakes, pushing me hard, making the class feel long and tense. I’d sit there, anxiously watching the clock, hoping time would pass faster so the class would end.

Despite quitting, I passed English with flying colors throughout primary school until secondary school arrived.

But it wasn't easy, I faced many challenges.

The lack of a good teaching method started to affect my grades. I realized my English teachers weren’t teaching well; even though I understood, I couldn’t communicate effectively. The methodology was very poor, focusing solely on grammar exercises, filling in blanks, reading texts, and answering questions with the sole aim of passing the exam. Plus, I only had class twice a week, when the classes were over English seemed to vanish from my life.

Once again, I found myself forced to spend more money on classes at an academy. University was around the corner, and my degree would be in English.

Thankfully, to my surprise, I was accepted, but I’m not lying when I say the four years of college were the worst of my life. My knees would shake when I had to speak English in front of my classmates; they all seemed much more confident and fluent than me. Constant anxiety, overthinking, and very little confidence in myself.

They helped me find my purpose and passion.

Fortunately, after the storm comes the calm. When I finished college, I fell in love with an Irish guy. With a lot of fear but also determination and enthusiasm, I traveled alone for the first time at the age of 22 to Ireland. I managed the English-speaking situations that arise when traveling to a foreign country, immersed myself in its culture, and my confidence and fluency soared. My level was good enough to allow me to talk about more complex topics. He was a teacher, and we both shared a passion for history. We shared reflections and feelings about the world and ourselves.

Everything was going well until suddenly the pandemic hit. I lost love but found my purpose. I started teaching Spanish online and realized I was good at it. I set out to help many people who have been in my situation. I want you to save all the time and money I had to invest and enjoy learning Spanish. I want you to immerse yourself in Spanish culture, learn to learn, and get to know yourself while learning Spanish so you can reach a good level of confidence and fluency that allows you to establish meaningful relationships and deep conversations. That’s what motivates me to keep going
